Looking at jobs on the Internet

Objective:  Students will gather information about jobs and job availability on the Internet.

Computer skills required (teacher and student):  Use the Internet

Previously taught:  Job vocabulary; job categories

Length: One class period (2 hours)

Procedure: Before computer day, print out information about a job from the Department of Labor website. See instructions for students

Use it to familiarize the students with the categories of information--Job Outlook, etc.

On computer day, take students though the first part of the instructions (finding information about a job on the Dept. of Labor website.) Encourage them to look for sentences they can understand and not to worry about unfamiliar vocabulary. They write the information they find on the handout. They can do this in pairs. Students who finish early can help others.

Once everyone is finished, take them through the second part of the instructions, finding a job at Yahoo! hotjobs. The handout only requires students to look up job availability, but you may want to point out the other services available (resume help, etc.)

If they have more time, students can look up jobs at Monster.com.
