Procedure: For several days in advance, remind students to bring in a family picture. The best pictures for this exercise are pictures of a group of people who are doing things (at a party, for example.) Studio portraits are OK, though.
First day:
When most students have a picture to write about, show them a sample paragraph & picture [1], preferably of your family, so they know what theyre working toward.
Ask students to tell their group about the people in their picture without pointing. They need to describe the people in the picture and tell who they are. "The man who is playing the guitar is my husband. The child who is sitting on my lap is my daughter," etc.
After they have described their pictures, give students 30 minutes to write their composition. For students who dont have a picture, ask them to think about a picture they could bring in the next day and describe it. If student is at a loss, give him/her a magazine picture to describe. They can write "imaginary" sentences about the people in the picture. "The woman who is sitting at the desk is a secretary "
While students are writing, scan the pictures [2]. Save pictures on the hard disk (thaw space) [3]. If a student finishes early and is interested, you could show him/her how to do the scanning.
Collect and correct the compositions.
Second day
Return corrected compositions. Show students how to Open Word [4].
Show students how to:
increase the font size (make the story bigger) [7]
Print the stories and put them on the bulletin board!
Assessment: Evaluation of final product.
