Adding Adjectives and Adverbs
Objective: Use adjectives and adverbs.
Type a story in Word and save it on the thawspace. I used the simple version of "King Midas" from Stories We Brought With Us by Kasser & Silverman, but any simple story will do.
Save the story as a template by choosing "document template" under "format."
Photocopy a handout like this one. (This is a Word document, so you can download & adapt it.)
As students make their additions, walk around and show them how to make their changes red so that they show up. One of my students made the adjectives red and the adverbs blue!
Templates can be used in a variety of ways. Write a letter or a paragraph that is lacking information and ask students to include the information by clicking and inserting. You can prompt the students with a set of questions and let them make decisions about where the information would fit best. The nice thing about using a template instead of having students start from scratch is that you don't have to spend time teaching formatting. The document already has the typeface, spacing, etc. that you want.
I have used templates with Beginning Low students by putting in the beginnings of sentences and having students finish them.
